Riding on the Upper Green again!

There have been bear kills left and right up there.  This is part of the herd that blew through the pasture fence the other day because of the bears.  Six of us put them back...and it was all we could do.

These moraines are a cuss to move cattle through, especially when they don't want to go that direction.  They did not want to go back up there. In the middle of the photo at the very bottom which is the Crow Creek crossing and gate..are the ones they are starting through the gate.  We are way back up the ridge with the back end of over 400 head.  We took them about two miles in.  This photo doesn't do the steepness and rocks justice.

The day was gorgeous for the job however.  Cool, and no bugs.
Pictured are Coke Landers, Charles Price, Mike Beard, Bob..and of course your blog photographer.
Jill, the rider from the Bend camp had already headed home.

Bull Day..it went well.

Except Ty high-centered in a deep washed out rut and he was in the lead of two other trailers with bulls.  Albert's stock truck and truck and trailer were at the cattleguard waiting for these guys to unload.  Everything has to be unloaded at once, because they are not easy to hold.  The drive went exceptionally well.

So he unloaded his load..the bulls you see in the photo below, and we drove them up to the cattle guard where everyone else unloaded and we were on our way.

We ate a very late lunch at the Kendall Valley Lodge aka Elk Ridge.  Sandy and Justin Wright have it now.  It was a good meal.

Fly In at Big Piney Airport....baby antelope...drive up Gyp Creek down Moose Creek to Green River Lakes

Dick Klaber was the "line boy" when we flew in.

Locals brought their old and restored cars..it was fun.

This doesn't really show how many people were there.  A lot of the bridge club and "substitutes" were there.

These baby antelope are right across from Kathy Kerback's house.

The title doesn't mention we also went to The Place for their free hamburgers.  They were cooked outside, and great.  We don't know how their auction went.

Halfway down Moose Creek we counted over a hundred head of elk...stringing across to get a drink.  We watched them for fifteen minutes.

This little water fall and flowers were so beautiful.

A Photo from Yesterday...

A shot of White Rock aka Cat Ears and a little bit of Square Top from Mud Lake while we were holding cows to mother up!
Today I didn't get much done...a lot of washing...the house is still a disaster.  We went to Rendezvous Pointe...wormed horses...and hualed 3 down to Jerry's.  Bob has plans to work with the geldings...hope it happens.
Went to the lake while checking water.  It's still going over the overflow.  Stopped at Hagenstein's to return their chain saw.  Bob used it while ours was broken down.

Day 13 Three different herds into Mud Lake

Palmer and Michael

The first bunch Coke's lead end at Mud Lake.

The 2nd bunch almost at Mud Lake...Coke Lander's bunch.

Holding herd with the last bunch; Albert's.  It was after noon when we left for the ride down to the trailers..which was another hour and a half.

Drive into Mud Lake Day 12

The gather heading for the red gate. Twenty one degrees up there this morning.  Ahh, but lunch at The Place.

We saw eighteen head of cow elk..we think all with calves heading over the ridge just behind our drive in the Mud Lake pasture.  Jill and Gary..eat your hearts out!

Mothering up at Mud Lake.  We'll be headed there tomorrow too.  I had actually planned for yesterday to be my last day..but I am pretty sure tomorrow will be.  Decided Day 13 had an omnious sound....but will do it.  My mares are worn out. Bob's Chaco horse threw a front shoe today, so he'll be doing some horse shoeing if he rides the next day to push Albert's bunch clear into the lake.  At this point he plans to do it.

Day 11 on the Drift...Day 3 into the Pastures

As we were about to ride back down to the trailers, I shot this one of Bob, Garlie, Tif and Rhonda on the ridge above the gate that goes into the cabin pasture.
At the Bentonite Pile, as we were loading up, Betty and Brent, Donna and Mart, and Cyd and Pat came by enroute to Fish Lake on the Dubois side.  Was fun to see them!

DAy 10

We picked up the back end of the cattle we pushed yesterday and took them the same place.  It went way slower and harder. We had just made the gather when I took this picture.  It's the only one I took.  Like yesterday, I had my coat on all day.  I expect it'll be more of the same tomorrow.

Pushing the lead end of yesterday's herd to the NW pasture..ie our old cow camp!

Toots thought she was home.  She drug her heels going back to the trailer.

Not enough snow left in those mountains...there should be lots of snow on Gyp Mountain when the cows get to the pastures...
We took Prices and Jill and Gary to our "bear tree" out of Kiya Park.  We assisted Brian DeBolt of Wild Life Services when he snared the head biting bear who had just killed a calf down this hill by crushing it's head.  The tree is still alive, but it was ripped all around by that grizzly bear.  Jelly Bean's neck is sort of in the way to see some of the claw marks that you can tell go over Bob's head.  That bear's right front foot was snared at the bottom of that tree.  It was amazing.
