Up checking the ditch
Thursday, May 16, 2013
I snagged a couple of pictures off of facebook that Jonita took of yesterday.
This was after the drive from Charles' place across the BLM to the Sommers' place, where the cows and calves were paired, counted (me) and stuck out on the Mesa. Occasionally I did some cutting when something that wasn't paired got past the others.

Moving Cattle today
Not exactly a picture of a cattle drive is it? The robins are determined they want to nest over the door. I knock it down as soon as the begin. They caught us gone today! Had to laugh.
The drive began with a soft rain at day break. I decided against taking my camera..it was in the truck, but we were short handed and I decided to cowboy and not photograph. The drive went really well. I guess no feed played a huge part. We got to Albert's an hour and a half quicker than usual. Then the cutting went well too. Bob was on Jelly Bean who didn't behave for the first half mile, and then he worked well. We had one of DeeAnn's wonderful meals afterwards. A nice day.

Mother's Day
The "South Wyoming Girls" decided to drive to Pinedale last night to spend the day with me...I drove to Betty's this morning for coffee. We then went to lunch, and then for a drive up to the lake.
A little after three, they headed back to Laramie and Cheyenne.
I...I had a perfect day! Thank you so much...Jane, Betty, and Nancy. Tana too!

Cheeney Landscaping
Sara and Ana power raked the lawn. The machine wouldn't go through the gate, so they did a little outside the box thinking about this! Great job girls.

A trip to Jackson and Teton National Park..
Bob had an appointment in Jackson to take his flight physical in the late afternoon. However he needed to get his chain saw to the dealer for repair, early, so we had much time to kick around.
I didn't know he had an idea to drive into the park and find a road he was on with Bob Skinner over thirty years ago, when they hauled horses to their hunting camp on Arizona Lake, which is on the forest border of the park. Turned out he had no trouble finding it at all.
But meanwhile, we were remembering Amie's wedding to Gerry Richmond in 1967 at Mardy Murie's home under the Tetons. So we decided to find it. It isn't exactly a museum, because she didn't want it turned into a museum. It is part of the park, and open to visitors. I kind of think it was just opened for the year yesterday. They were un-winterizing it. They were so pleased to have visitors who had been there when she lived there.
I love the kitchen, which I was in with Mardy..helping her find this and that, the day of the wedding. The water heater by the kitchen stove with the pipes running through the firebox is rigged like ours was when I was growing up. I think I remember it being called a "water jacket" in the stove. The hot water itself created the flow, because the hot water would rise to the top.
For the most part this home looks like it did when we were there. I remember much clutter, because she had many of Olaus' papers around so she could study them. She was taking on a conservation effort, and had much stuff around about that too. The Park had done a good job retaining the flavor of it, however.
I'm not sure these pictures came up in order, but it doesn't matter. This is on a bend in the road by Jackson Lake. In the lower right corner, you can pick out grizzly tracks. We ran into people who were doing a movie about the local female bear, who was about 150 yards up the hill with two, two year old cubs. I think her number is 610, and she is well documented, because she has spent most of her life right there...by the highway. We visited with them probably a half an hour, and it was interesting. About eight swans came in and landed while we were there.
The buffalo were near and on the road, presenting no apparent threat, but I stood behind the car to get photos of them. Hence, the road edge covers a lot of their heads and feet.
I liked the snow on the buck fence.
We ate a really good lunch at Dornan's Chuckwagon, which is a bar that serves meals.
After Bob's appointment, we thought we'd eat dinner at Camp Creek. Wrong. They are remodling the kitchen, and will be open again on the 18th. So we stopped at the Elkhorn and had a burger there. Nothing was going on there, but the gal was neat and fixed us a nice hamburger. As we were leaving I asked her name. Colleen Cambell. She went to school with my girls, and actually knew Michal, her brother Lennie's friend much better. It was neat to visit with her.

Dinner with Cheeneys at the Stockmans
We enjoyed a night out with Cheeneys for Brent's birthday.
We were treated to quite a sunset as we drove home. On face book I saw several posts about the phenomenal sunset..which it was.
