This and that!

My mare Toots enjoying our picnic!

Opening Birthday Stuff.

This is a portrait of a very small inch worm!

Since I got on here, we've had a local fire that was ferocious for a while, and then a timely rain squelched. The Rendezvous came and went, along with many people. Sally had a booth, that we frequented. She did well there. I'd helped a little on some of her stuff.

Bob had a birthday. We did Rendezvous stuff and rodeos. Sunday night we celebrated his birthday with two of his boys, and his grandkids. It was a fun picnic at Fremont Lake.

Sunday we also loaded the horses and hit the mountains for a few hours. As always, that was great. These pictures represent all of that. I had planned to take pictures of Sally doing her booth thing, but I didn't get to town with my camera.

We'll be out of pocket for a while. We're headed to Alaska tomorrow.

Poker ride

7-7-07..what a date! Bob put Buckles last shoes on her.We loaded the horses and headed to Bondurant for the poker ride up there. It was a nice ride of a little over twelve miles. We started off at Sleeping Indian Outfitters, where we bought cards. I got one for myself and one for Toots. Bob did the same for himself and his mare. Then we got our second one up the trail a few miles. Ernie was there. He’d ridden up country with Loziers, that being Gary Lozier and crew. The next stop also offered hamburgers and hotdogs in addition to pop, water and beer. I was still having good hands until this point. I drew a joker, and Uncle Jimmie realized he was supposed to take that out. So I didn’t get to use it. I had a hamburger and Bob had a hotdog there. Uncle Jimmie brought out the booze, so I induldged in a gulp of Jim Beam! Ahhh! The next stop where we crossed Shoal Creek was manned by Bob. My hands are getting worse. We got back to the starting point about four thirty. I still had my original pair of Jacks and that was that. Paul Crintenton barbequed a pig, and the meal was wonderful. Didn’t know many people there. Robyn Grassell showed up, as did Kevin Cambell. Scott Rambsey was there, and Brethhauers too. We got home about eight. It was a good day.
July 8th. Sunday. The phone rang at six and it was Brandon. He had no place to eat breakfast so we had him and Rick come on out for breakfast. He went with us to take the horses to pasture, while Rick went to the motel. Sally called and wanted help with silver. I went up, and took her a necklace I’d done for her. Went to the store. Painted two windows. Brian came out for lunch. He took our rubber boots that we’ll need in Alaska for us. Hope that works out! We went to Johnny Sulenta's 80th birthday party. It was beautifully done. Saw lots of old timers we hadn't seen in a long time.

I forgot my camera, but here's my journal for the last couple days.

July 3rd. Tuesday. We left here at 4:30 a.m. and went to Michael’s. Gene Pearson and grandson Blane got there shortly after we did. We ran the bull in to get them out of the way. Cole showed up with his boys and the Box R bunch. We rounded up the school section and headed in. We sorted calves out and ran cows through the shutes. Jennifer had lunch for us, and then we put the cows up in Paul’s, sorted pairs and let them out. Jennifer and the kids rode up there. Palmer and I guarded the gate. He was a hoot. Then we put the bulls out in the front pasture, got a yearling and took it up to the river bottom with all the others. It was a long but full filling day.
July 4th. Wednesday. Bob put front shoes on Toots. I went to town for groceries, and ran a couple pair of earrings I made for Sally up to her. Later took some plastic dinner ware and baskets for paper plates up to her for her barbeque in case we were late from our ride. Late in the morning we saddled up and rode up Boulder Basin. We rode into Pot Creek Park and Kim Rush park. It is soooo dry up there it’s a crime. We had our lunch under the quakies overlooking the Green River. I forgot my camera and was mad at myself all day for that. We got home a little after five, cleaned up, made a fruit salad and we headed up to Pete and Sally’s for their fourth of July barbeque. George and Karen, Larry and Pam, Moors from Arizona (both couples), Allen and Faith and Rene Reed, Aaron, Sandy and boys and Susan were all there. A good time was had by all. The fireworks display the fire fighting boys put on was awesome.

Lost calf story!

Out on the mesa, the gas guys are fixing to build a new pipe line along an old one. They are drilling about 18" holes six feet deep along the old pipe line to determine where to put the new one. A couple of them were out there kidding each other. One told the other he would stuff him down there. As they laughed, one looked down and saw a calf. The other didn’t believe him. After they both saw it, they didn’t know what to do about it. They wound up getting a small guy, holding him upside down while he put a rope or chain on the calf and pulled him up. The calf couldn’t stand up, but was alive. They fed it many bottles of water. They still didn't know what to do about it. They contacted a brand inspector from Big Piney, however Michael has all new brands. They also called Garlie Swain. One remembered seeing cowboys moving cows, and that would be us. So they took the calf down to the school section and stuck it in with Michael’s cows. Now to back up..for two days, Michael had a cow without a calf. We had her down to the corral three times, and she was vaccinated twice. We kept driving her back up there..but couldn’t find her calf. It turned out to be that calf that we got together with the mother yesterday. It was hungry and lame in the back, but sucked heartily. We moved it over a mile with the rest of the cows to get to their summer pasture.

The Pink hat!

Doesn't she look like she should be on the cover of Western Horseman or something? For a while she had her pink leather vest on too..but the day was just too warm. Kirsten is just riding for the first time this year.
We were taking the last little bunch to pasture. We've spent four long days cowboying...bringing stuff in from the Mesa...cutting pairs..old cows and calves north..young pairs in to be vaccinated, and down on the Tracey place. Somehow when I write it up, it doesn't sound like that much work, but it is. I enjoyed every moment.

Father's Day

We started the day loading the horses and a picnic lunch and heading up country. We rode up the Well's trail...you might remember a couple of years ago, that's where Bob had his bad horse wreck. Anyhow, we rode up that, and once on top, Bob gps-ed a fence he wanted to do for several years. Then we rode into Phil's camp...and visited with his dog. We rode a couple of different trails up on top...discussed the pros and cons of last years fire, and rode back down to the truck and trailer. It was about seven p.m. after we had our horses unsaddled and taken back to pasture. When we got home, there was a message from Michael about them doing a Father's Day picnic at New Fork Lake. We jumped back in the truck and headed back up there. They were just starting the fire and digging out the kid's fishing gear as we arrived. It was a fun evening..enjoying the fire by the lake. Neat day!

From one end of the county to the other!

We began the day heading up to Snook's old place to meet Leif who is replacing us at the Mosquito Lake cow camp. We had some electric fence wire he needed. On the way we saw a doe with new fawns. Later I'll post some hay stack photos. I have more Willow Creek pictures I mean to post sometime too. This photo of Bob leaning on Snooks' old truck is pretty cool!

Later we gathered up Sally and headed down to Muddy to Lynn Thomas'. We enjoyed her lemonaide and cookies...beautiful smile, and wonderful art. She has her Art in the Barn up, and I love to go see it every year. Sally sent the photo of Lynn and myself! Thanx Sally.

On the way home we stopped at Michael's. He said I could rifle his trash for an old fence post. I have great ideas to decorate it. We'll see. If it turns out you'll see it here. If not..you won't! Palmer was helping load some old wood for us.

A trip to Willow Creek, The Box R, and all!

A neat day today. Can't get better! We hauled our horses into Irv's, and headed north from there. Jim and Charm joined us for a day down memory lane. We talked about the old ranches, and the days we enjoyed so much. We rode around the Z-U buildings, and our old place. We went up near the Guard Station for our lunch. Chad Hayward showed up, and defended the fact all the willows are burned. I'm sure he's right..it will be better moose habitat, when there are about three years old. But Willow Creek is certainly naked now. We went up the oil well road, then up to Dead Horse Park. From there we went into Indian Park, and down Lozier trail. We visited with Cole a little as he was shoeing a horse. Irv hurt his knee a couple of days ago, and was upstairs with it up and using ice. Get well Irv. Good to see Robyn too. She look great.

Brandon

We enjoyed Brandon so much. This was taken with his phone in the Weatherford shack. We missed a barbeque tonight..as it's his last night. Brandon..we hope you come back to our country. If not, bring Sara and that cute Carter to see us...next fall would work!! :) Anyhow, you were a joy!

Jeanette's book signing

Jeanette is an amazing lady. Next week she'll be 89 years old. Today is also Wilma and Ken's 50th anniversary. They want the day to belong to Jeanette however, so a proper celebration will be later. Jeanette's book, "Sundown" is going to be a fun read. It's a look into our county's history from a woman's point of view..not to mention, from her humerous point of view. I haven't read it..just looked through it, but I can tell I'll enjoy it.

We're missing Michael's "little" branding today, because of a wedding reception. Like Michael said, there'll be more. I wanted to watch the little kids do the roping. What a hoot. I had big plans for pictures on here.

Also, the best news I've heard in many a moon! Irv and Robyn are back together! Whoopee!
